Incoming 3rd-year students undergo academic assessment

The college department administers qualifying exams to incoming third-year students of Bachelor of Secondary Education, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Science in  Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Criminology.

Incoming third-year students undergo qualifying examinations before the start of the new academic year 2022-2023. The examination aims to assess the student’s knowledge and preparedness for a higher level of learning. It also evaluates the efficiency of the faculty members in delivering the subjects and lessons.

The Civil Engineering students experience an online qualifying exam last year, but last June this year, the exams are administered through a limited face-to-face set-up. Students need to be qualified based on the results of the exam before they can be admitted to 3rd-year level.

“Those who fail to pass the said examination can still enroll as a third-year student but will undergo a Probationary Status. It is a way to monitor the performance of the students,” said Engr. Von Tiosing, BSCE faculty.

“To our students, don’t be afraid in taking this Qualifying Examination. This is to prepare you not just for the next level of learning because this examination already exposed you to some CE board exam problems. This is one step closer in preparation for your board examination after you graduate as a BSCE student,” Engr. Tiosing added.

Bachelor of Science in Criminology students also took the qualification exam to assess if the student possesses the required learning competencies of the covered subjects. The professional education courses taken by the examinee are the coverage of the qualifying examination and these selected professional education courses are the same subjects included in the licensure examination for criminologists.

The School of Criminal Justice decided to administer the exam among this batch since limited face-to-face classes are already allowed. Dean Mark John Pangan added that it will also serve as Diagnostic Test among educators to evaluate the highest and weak points of the students per subject that will require further academic intervention.

“The students were given a remedial exam to be given the 2nd chance to pass the QE. If the student failed in the 2nd time, he or she will be placed under academic probation where concerned students will submit and process an undertaking form. Academic probation will be lifted only once the student passed his existing enrolled subjects offered during the 1st semester,” said Dean Pangan.

Qualification examinations will continue to be implemented before the next enrollment for incoming third-year students to assess and evaluate their knowledge and skills. This is also a way for the administrators to determine what field or specialization still needs to be improved and developed.
