Advancing Inclusive Education at Holy Cross College: Empowering Students with Special Needs

In today’s dynamic educational landscape, Holy Cross College stands out for its commitment to inclusivity and the unique needs of students with special requirements. Teachers at Holy Cross College prioritize diversity, playing a pivotal role in creating engaging and nurturing learning environments for all students.

The college recently hosted a “Seminar-Workshop for Educators and Parents/Guardians in Dealing with Children with Special Needs” on February 02, 2023. This event focused on bolstering inclusive teaching techniques, fostering collaboration among educators and stakeholders, and integrating technology to better serve students with special needs.

Mrs. Arliza M. Reyes, the IBED Principal, emphasized the importance of the seminar, stating, “The topic at hand addresses a crucial aspect – the inclusive support and individualized care required for students with special needs. This seminar equips parents and teachers with the knowledge, strategies, and resources to create inclusive classrooms and nurturing home environments, ensuring every child can thrive and reach their full potential.”

The primary goal of Holy Cross College is to empower learners with special needs, driving positive change for a more inclusive and prepared future. During the seminar, Mr. Danilo B. Talusan, RGC, RPm, Guidance Counselor & Peer Adviser at Far Eastern University, shared insights on coping with mental health issues. He emphasized the necessity of a safe and friendly environment and highlighted the value of innovative strategies for the holistic development of children with special needs.

Mr. Camilo D. Lacanlale, the SHS Assistant Principal, stressed the significant influence teachers and parents have on students’ lives. He underscored the importance of fostering students’ social and emotional well-being, in addition to academic performance. Regardless of diversity, he urged creating a secure environment, capturing students’ attention, recognizing individuality, and implementing activities based on their interests, making learning interesting, productive, and relevant.

“As educators, our responsibility extends beyond the transmission of knowledge; it encompasses creating an environment where every student, regardless of their abilities or challenges, feels valued and understood. It is not just about adapting to their needs but celebrating the unique strengths they bring to our classrooms.”

Addressing parents, the message conveyed the significance of their partnership, understanding, and support in their child’s educational journey. Together, they form a powerful alliance working towards a common goal – providing every student with the tools and opportunities needed to flourish.

Holy Cross College genuinely supports the development of a diverse society and improves individual students’ lives. However, it’s crucial to recognize that inclusivity is not merely a concept but a practice requiring constant reflection and adaptation.

The one-day seminar-workshop served as a platform and reminder to be progressive and open to change in the ongoing development of education. Mr. Lacanlale encouraged everyone to apply the insights gained from the seminar, turning them into seeds of positive change that embody the principles of inclusivity and make a difference in students’ lives.

The HCC administration, teachers, and stakeholders are dedicated to meeting the demands of learning and success in a diverse environment while upholding the institution’s commitment to offering high-quality education.

Together, let’s build an environment of inclusivity and support at Holy Cross College.
