A Toast to Victory

Holy Cross College has made its mark in the art of mixology, as James Wyeth D. Yabut, a Bachelor of Science student in Hospitality Management, emerged as one of the top 10 grand winners in the inaugural HRM Students Cocktail Competition organized by Emperador Academy, a division of Emperador Distillers, Inc. (EDI).

The cocktail competition was rigorous, attracting 500 BSHM students from various colleges and universities across the Philippines during its inauguration on April 29, 2024. The participants were narrowed down to the top 30 semi-finalists on May 17, 2024. Lastly, the top 10 grand winners were revealed on May 24, 2024.

On June 20, 2024, Mr. Gerry G. Ele II and Mr. Joey Divino, representatives from Emperador Academy, visited Holy Cross College to presen the awards. Mr. Yabut, as one of the top 10 grand winners, received a scholarship grant amounting to ₱100,000.00. Additionally, he was awarded a limited edition jacket and the opportunity to complete his on-the-job training at Emperador Academy’s partner institutions. Furthermore, Holy Cross College received an additional ₱100,000.00.

Mr. Gerry G. Ele II, the Business Development Manager of Emperador Academy, shared that Mr. Yabut and Holy Cross College were chosen because of their story and how they incorporated the Emperador product into their cocktail-making.

Mr. Yabut shared that his journey to achieve this triumph was not easy, as academics were a significant challenge, especially with the numerous course requirements, particularly in his research subject. Luckily, he was given a second chance to enter the competition. He started by looking for the right ingredients. “Naghanap po kami ng ingredients na pwedeng ihalo sa Emperador Brandy. ‘Yung mas magko-combine combine ‘yung mga lasa ng syrup or something na herbs na pwedeng igamit,” he said. He also left a message for the BSHM students: “Kung gusto mo talaga iyong ginagawa mo, dapat ipagpatuloy mo.” This reminds us not to abandon our dreams.

Lastly, Ms. Jaramie D. Gonzales, the Dean of the School of Hospitality Management, extended her admiration to Mr. Yabut and her department. “We prepared and practiced to get this far. James Wyeth D. Yabut is the perfect bartender student because of his skills, passion, and dedication in his field of specialization, which is bartending,” Ms. Gonzales said. “We are proud and loud to say that Holy Cross College’s School of Hospitality Management is known when it comes to competitions,” Ms. Gonzales added.
