The education landscape has seen dramatic changes since the pandemic started, the biggest being the discouragement of face-to-face classes in all schools across the country. As a result, educational institutions turned to technology, communication platforms, and online education platforms to continue reaching out to students.
Holy Cross College, the leading higher educational institution in the eastern part of Pampanga, invested in the development of its own online learning system so education for Kapampangan students will keep on. This e-Learning Management System (e-LMS) is called the HCC Heart Cloud.
This is the second year the e-LMS will be used for HCC’s online classes. The school president, Atty. Dennis Pangan encouraged all new teachers to immerse themselves in the platform ahead of the start of classes on July 27. A bulk of their academic responsibilities will be done on HCC Heart Cloud.
The development of the e-LMS began in 2019, even before the Covid-19 crisis happened. At that time, the school administrators were already looking to strengthen a potential online education platform in HCC.
Teachers upload their modules and learning materials to the HCC Cloud, which students can access through their e-LMS accounts. HCC Cloud allows teachers to track student attendance, edit learning materials and check assignments or tasks. Both teachers and students can also find the course descriptions for each program and grade level on the platform. In addition, major exams are uploaded to, answered, and accomplished on the e-LMS.
Xavier Pangan, the eLMS Head, said the HCC Heart Cloud is user-friendly. He explained the design of the graphical user interface (GUI) allows the users to interact with the platform easily. The icons found on the e-LMS are well-labeled. This allows users to know the function or purpose of each button.
Moreover, because the system does not require user subscriptions, the personal data of teachers and students are secure. Information like full name, contact details, and address are secured by the HCC cloud, not third-party data storage.
Meanwhile, for online video conferencing, teachers have the option to invite their students through the school’s Microsoft Teams account.
During the academic year 2020-2021, the platform could accommodate up to ten thousand users. The school is currently expanding its capacity.
The school with a heart also used e-LMS to promote one of its core values – Caritas (Charity). Last year, HCC signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Education Sta. Ana District to give more than ten public schools in the town access to the e-LMS. The school beneficiaries used the HCC Heart Cloud as their virtual platform for their online classes.
