Afraid of numbers? Not a reason anymore to avoid quantitative research as HCC Psychology faculty, Mr. Jhaymar Garcia explains research tips and tricks during the seminar conducted by Research and Development Unit (RDU) last September 5 at the Learning Resources Center.
The hybrid seminar participated by teachers and students explored the differences between various methods, designs, and techniques. It also tackled the research process specifically the steps of quantitative research and what to use or when to use different methods in data gathering.
“I always say to students lalo na sa mga undergraduate, trust your adviser or professor tutulunga ka nila sa data mo. Huwag ka matakot to explore numbers because someone will guide, sa dami ng statistician sa school at sa dami ng data analyst pwede ka nila i-guide,” said Garcia.
In writing research, students must start with a good research idea and an interesting field to study. However, the researcher must avoid adding variables without any basis and must ensure that a study has a theoretical framework.
Garcia also shared techniques for sorting data collected for the review of the related literature. He emphasized that you cannot cram this part because it defines the gaps in your research area.
“May kaya bang tumapos ng RRL in just a night? Pero to be honest you cannot cram the RRL, mahirap po mag-cram. Kapag ganiyan parang hilaw ang research, hindi pinag isipang mabuti. So I suggest that at least a month and kailangan talagang magbasa ng marami,” said Garcia.
He also reminded researchers that before proceeding with the methodology, students must establish a good and solid literature review. This will also help in selecting a hypothesis that seems mostly to be correct.

In quantitative research, research must make sure also to make variables measurable and must set limitations on what is being measured in the study. The keynote speaker explained also the sampling techniques and the conduct of data gathering.
The Research and Development Unit spearheaded the seminar to promote a “culture of quality and excellence in research at the Holy Cross College.” Research head and SASED Dean, Dr. Paolo Lumanlan said that they want to promote safe, ethically-sound, and high-quality research undertakings.
“During the past RDU administration, we had 10 faculty members involved in research (mostly from SECLS and SASD); however, since A.Y. 2021-2022, we now have at least 250% increase in faculty involvement when it comes to research writing,” said Dr. Lumanlan.
About 14 faculty from Integrated Basic Education, 10 from the School of Engineering, Computer and Library Science, 6 from the School of Arts, Sciences and Education, three from the School of Criminal Justice, and two from the School of Business, Accountancy, and Hospitality.
