After a nerve-wracking game, the Holy Cross College League of Legends team overwhelmed the team of Bulacan State University in the Semi-Finals. However, the HCC team failed to snatch the gold medal against Angeles University Foundation and landed in second place.
The HCC League of Legends team comprises 6 participants, including Christian Neri Tuazon, Clarence Estacio, Dave Emmanuel Nuada, Mary Margarette Mariano, Ronnie John Mark Sangil, and Jerold Velonta, all are Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (CpE) students of HCC.
The school with a heart took the opportunity to play for the first time in the CpE-Challenge and CpElympics 2021 organized by the Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Region 3.
E-sport is a growing industry that paved way for competitive gamers to compete in different national competitions with prizes even reaching from a million to 34 million dollars.
League of Legends is a massive online battle arena that requires strategy, teamwork, and quick reaction time.
Aside from the League of Legends, students also participated in the Mobile Legends and Call of Duty tournament. Players said that playing esports also requires a lot of brainpower and discipline.
Prince Christian S. Pangilinan, a 2nd year, CpE student of HCC, said that playing Call of Duty needs tactics and prioritize specific objectives to win the game.
“This is my first time joining an online game tournament competing with different schools. Especially during the pandemic, we can’t gather as a team, but we fight as one. It was one of a kind experience! I’ve learned that you shouldn’t celebrate too early when you and your team got the early game. Don’t be comfortable and complacent because there’s a possibility that the enemy will change their strategy, and you should also find a way to counter it,” Pangilinan said.
In line with the esports tournament, the Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Region 3 also conducted the 5th Regional CpE Challenge Programming Competition, Quiz Bee, and Digital Art.
Ronnie John Mark Sangil, a 2nd year, CpE student ranked 5th place in the Programming category with Julius Rolle.
Sangil also represented the school for Quiz bee together with Dave Emmanuel Nuada and Ma. Ceneza Mataga.
“It provided me with an opportunity to obtain additional experience, demonstrating skills with my collab, interpret and assess outcomes, and discover personal aptitude. I also encouraged myself to use new approaches and improve my abilities and knowledge through the Quiz Bee,” Sangil said.
The school with a heart gives opportunities like this to expose students to the modern world of technology and discover their skills. Engr. Romalyn Gomez, the team coach, said it would help students understand the competition in computer engineering.
“It is for the students to gained experienced and to be engaged with digital activities/platform together with different universities, to enhance their social and communication skills, not only to represent our school but also to enjoy/explore the events and activities,” she said.
HCC students also showcased their talents in the CPE Got Talent, Gener Lirio and Jewel Jao got 5th place. While Prince Christian Pangilinan was awarded 5th place in the Best Digital Art.
